Sorcerer's Stone Challenge

This was a whole-camp activity based on the one found here:http://summercampprogramdirector.com/harry-potter-camp-ideas-part-3-the-extras/

We changed parts of it so that the it went like this (please note, a lot of this is similar or the same as from the website listed above, but there are some edits):

  1. Fluffy – A staff member starts barking and won’t let anyone pass through a door. The students assigned to this task must find something (we used a recorder) nearby that will help them get by “Fluffy”. Musical instruments must be found and played to put “Fluffy" to sleep.
  2. Devil’s Snare – The next students are captured and surrounded by a group of staff holding vines. They must figure out how to get away from them. The answer is to relax and stay still. The staff will then let go.
  3. Keys- Ten or so keys are scattered around a specific area. Students assigned to this task must take a key (one key at a time), run to a specified door and try to unlock it. We used paper keys, and a counselor standing in front of the door pretended to try to fit each key in the lock. Students must continue until they find the correct key.
Connect Four
  1. Chess – Since many of the students do not know how to play chess, and a game can take a long time, students must beat the professors in a game of life-sized Connect Four (with people as the pieces) before moving on.
  2. Riddle – We used the Ravenclaw Test of Logic from this site: http://www.zhasea.com/logic/puz12.html but it was too difficult for a large group of younger kids.
Logic Puzzle
  1. Sorcerer’s Stone – Once all the obstacles have been conquered the entire camp goes out to search for the Sorcerer’s Stone. The Stone is a large, red, diamond-shaped paperweight from a crafts store. The Stone is placed near a mirror since in the book the Stone came from Harry ‘s pocket as he looked in the Mirror of Erised.

The sheer number of kids trying to do this at once worked against us, so I would recommend splitting kids up into teams or assigning certain kids to each task or something? The only task that actually needs a lot of people is Giant Connect Four.
