Potions

Potions was definitely one of the biggest highlights for the kids. We knew it was going to be a mess, so it was outside instead of in the dungeons. There were 2 lessons during the 2 weeks of camp.

The first lesson covered 3-4 of the "Basic Potions" in their books, which I wrote after a lot of research of other people's ideas. The kids especially love potions that either taste good or explode a lot. The professor also gave a quick summary of a few interesting or well-known potions, and some of these facts made it onto the O.W.L.s.

The second lesson had one group potion which was intended to be an antidote to whatever was afflicting the counselors as part of our "camp storyline," but it didn't really work out that way (see the Camp Storyline post for details). This was a density column potion that looked pretty cool! The rest of the second lesson was inventing potions. We told the kids that at the end of the lesson we would be judging the best tasting, worst tasting, and potion with the most creative purpose. The kids had so much fun with this activity especially, asking the potions professor which potion ingredients tasted the best and what each one did. This part made the biggest mess though, with lots of ingredients getting spilled.
