Muggle Studies

We had one lesson of Muggle Studies in which the children learned about British culture and the Harry Potter fandom (a community of fans who get involved in the culture surrounding Harry Potter). The topics taught about the Harry Potter fandom included: the Harry Potter Alliance (a charity organization that works in Harry Potter's name), the International Quidditch Association, Harry Potter themed music, and other fan creations.
We also taught them about the British public school system, British (Muggle) currency, and a few phrases the Brits have that aren't used in American English. To teach them British slang words we gave out a pre-test and then had them guess how the British matches up with the American and corrected them and reviewed which British words corresponded with the American phrases. We considered teaching some facts about J.K. Rowling, although this didn't end up happening, and as a treat, we provided British candies (wine gums) and biscuits that the kids could try if they wanted to. We also discussed possible books and books series that the kids might enjoy after they finished the Harry Potter books.
This class was more informative than activity-based, so we also thought about doing Harry Potter mad libs (idea from here:  http://www.llemonade.com/hpgames.html ). You would take a passage from one of the books and take out words here and there and leave blanks to be filled in like a mad lib. An easily recognizable passage from the books would be funny.
