Hogsmeade

On the first day of the second week of each session we visited Hogsmeade! I think all of the kids would agree that this was one of the most fun parts of camp, if only for the excessive amounts of sugar that they were allowed to consume. In the "village" (which was a part of the yard that we didn't use during camp) we had 3 of the main shops: Zonko's Joke Shop, the Three Broomsticks, and of course Honeydukes. The pictures are all indoors though because it rained that day the first session, and we were so busy during Session 2 that no pictures got taken, sadly.

Zonko's Joke Shop

We only added this the second session of camp, and it had a variety of silly gags and toys from the local dollar store, such as untearable toilet paper and fake handcuffs. There were enough items for everyone to have one, but not everyone chose to spend their precious Galleons that way, o a few kids got two toys.

The Three Broomsticks

The only thing to buy here was butterbeer, which many of the kids enjoyed. It would have been fun to have one solid food item, but there was enough sugar at Honeydukes for everyone. Recipes for butterbeer abound on the internet.

Honeydukes

This was the biggest and most popular shop by far (of course)! We had a variety of candies based on the ones in the books, mostly handmade the weekend beforehand. The candies varied slightly each time, but here is the full list of everything we tried:

ICE MICE
White and yellow gummy bears frozen inside lemonade-flavored, light-blue tinted ice cubes. Individually wrapped.

JELLY SLUGS

Either small chunks of jell-o jigglers (we used a seashell candy mold that made them look sluggish) or just gummy worms. Two per baggy.

ACID POPS

Lollipops (preferably sour but regular Dum-Dums work fine) that are dipped first in water, corn syrup, or a mixture of the two, and then in Pop Rocks. I actually found some sour Pop Rocks that worked really well. These were dipped on the spot as they were requested so that the Pop Rocks wouldn't lose their pop over night.

CHOCOLATE FROGS

We bought a frog mold and melted chocolate for these. There were several varieties: Milk chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate with caramel in the center, and peppermint-flavored white chocolate.

CANDY POTION

We had mini cauldrons that we filled with chocolate pudding, gummy worm bits, an crushed Oreos, but these weren't very popular.

FIZZING WHIZZBEES
We found some crazy raspberry sherbet flavored chocolate melts at Michael's, so we used that with strawberry Pop Rocks in the middle. These sound weird but they got pretty good reviews.

COCKROACH CLUSTERS
Peanuts and rice krispies covered in chocolate, although we were oriinally thinking walnuts, and any kind of nut could work.

BLOOD POPS
I found a cool idea for dyeing lollipops to look bloody here:   and boy did they look cool when we tried them, but I didn't get the sugar hot enough so it failed to harden... Lollipops are hard to make in general, but if you can get them to turn out, good for you!

PEPPERMINT FLIES
 Crushed peppermints drizzled in chocolate.

DROOBLE'S BEST BLOWING GUM
I found some really cool "effects" gum at the Jewel, they came in packages of 5 and each gum did something: there was "icy gum" and "burning gum" which was pretty straightforward mint and hot cinnamon, but here was also one that made your mouth foam, one that was super sour, and one that made your mouth change colors. I opened all the packages and split them up into baggies of two each.

BERTIE BOTT'S EVERY FLAVOR BEAN

These we bought in a case of 24 on Amazon.

LEMON DROPS
We bought a bag of lemon drops and re-bagged them with 3 drops per bag.

TOOTHFLOSSING STRINGMINTS
We opened, crushed, and melted a bag of peppermints and then drizzled them over a cookie sheet. DO NOT USE WAX PAPER. The candy will permanently stick to the paper, and unless you fancy eating the wax paper, you will have to throw it away. The candy actually doesn't to a plain cookie sheet, although it couldn't hurt to use cooking spray or possibly parchment paper (test a little bit first). This stuff is actually really fun because it practically melts in your mouth.

LICORICE WANDS
Licorice sticks with one end dipped in chocolate as a "handle."
